Hong Kong, August 13, 1856

To the Colonial Government at Hong Kong,

I beg most respectfully to offer myself as a candidate for the appointment of Solicitor, now vacant, and to submit the enclosed testimonial (from amongst several which I can produce if favoured with an interview) for your consideration, and trust that they may be considered satisfactory.

I may state that I am a Graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, and was called to the Irish Bar in 1846, at which period I had the advantage of becoming acquainted with the practice and constitution of the profession, my late father having for a great number of years enjoyed the most extensive and highly respectable practice in the South of Ireland, and having afforded me opportunities of becoming acquainted with it, which I availed myself of.

Should I be successful in this application, I can confidently undertake to bring undeviating zeal and ability to the discharge of the duties of the appointment, which I shall duly discharge to the very best of my ability.

Yours faithfully,
